How to Survive a Major Change

November 16, 2008

Numbers 14:1-3

1 That night all the people of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.

2 All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert!

3 Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?"

1. If you want to make progress, don’t look back, look ahead Exodus 16:3 The Israelites said to them, "If only we had died by the LORD'S hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death."

2. When things are hard, don’t grumble and complain about inconveniences Numbers 11:4 And the rabble who were among them had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, “Who will give us meat to eat? We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and onions…but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this manna.”

3. When obstacles arise, don’t make the problems bigger than they really are Numbers 13:32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. 33 We saw the Nephilim there. We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."

4. When trials seem overwhelming, don’t think that God has abandoned you

5. When things are going slowly, don’t get too impatient Exodus 32:1 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, "Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him."

6. When it is time to change, don’t be afraid to do things differently Numbers 20:8 “Take the rod…and speak to the rock before your eyes that it may yield water…” v.11 Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod… v.12 The LORD said, “You have not believed me…”

God takes us through changes for a reason

God wants us to become His people

God wants us to learn to trust Him

God wants us to grow – and growth requires changes!
